“Live According To the Spirit” (Romans 8:5)

When a person comes to faith in Christ, they are given the indwelling Holy Spirit, which begins to work in their life to transform them into the image of Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:29). The transformative work of the Holy Spirit is emphasized by the Apostle Paul in Romans 8 and Galatians 5. Romans 8 is often referred to as providing the believer with a picture of living life in the Spirit.

In Romans 8:5, Paul indicates that there are those who have their minds set on the flesh, and then those who have minds set on the Spirit. In other words, we live according to what we set our minds on. If a person sets their minds on the flesh, they are continually thinking like the fallen world does which is opposed to God. On the other hand, one who focuses their mind on the Spirit will then live by the Spirit which seeks to please God.

What are you setting your minds on daily? Are you daily walking by the Spirit (Gal. 5:16)? So much of what is in our hearts and minds comes out in what we say and do. There are many things in our modern world that can consume our thinking. However, if we desire to please God, we must walk by the Spirit. Daily reading, reflecting and praying the Scriptures will enable the Holy Spirit to guide our minds.

A mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.
